Keep Walking
David writes, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” You may be wrestling with a serious illness, but you still have to keep walking; your home life might be falling apart, but you still have to keep walking; every day you may encounter the most vile temptations, but you still have to keep walking.
Why? Because lying defeated won’t get you anywhere.
The great temptation is to feel sorry for ourselves after we’ve fallen into sin but remember, self-pity will not help us get through the valley. The only option we have is to keep walking.
You may say, “I can’t Joe; you have no idea how much I’m struggling right now.” Just take one step at a time.
“One step!?” you may cry. “What good will one step do? The valley is deep, and the road is long!”
The Empire State Building was built one step at a time. The Notre Dame Cathedral was built one step at a time. Fix your eyes on the Lord Jesus and keep taking one step closer each day, and you will make it through this valley.
Notice it does not say, “I run through the valley of the shadow of death.” The child of God is in no hurry. This trial, hard as it may be, has been permitted by the sovereign Lord for a reason. In our longing for purity, we want to rush through the pain and daily battles. But we must not rush the lectures of God, because when we finish we will gain a PhD in suffering, worth more than any degree from Harvard or Oxford, because it comes from the very hand of God. So when the pain and the battles come today, and they will come, remember to keep walking.
