21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 5 OF 21

This chapter is considered one of the greatest chapters in the Bible about the deity of Christ.

Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 5:

  1. Theologians believe the festival Jesus was going to was Passover. We just read about Passover in Chapter 3 which means that John wrote about 2 weeks of Jesus’ ministry and then was silent for 50 weeks! He is writing very selectively. After this event, he will skip another 50 weeks before continuing on.
  2. Depending on which version you are reading, verse 4 might not be there. It is a verse explaining how people believed an angel would occasionally come down and stir the waters. The Jews thought the first person to jump in the pool when that happened would be healed. Many believe this was actually added later and was most likely just a tradition or opinion. God does not base who He heals on superstitious ideas or who comes first.
  3. When the man was healed, he ran to tell the leaders as he was probably unaware of the opposition to Jesus. He most likely expected them to rejoice with him. The Jews would start their plots to kill Jesus at this time and would continue on for the next 2 years.

About this Plan

21 Days in the Book of John

John sets the foundation for understanding the Trinity and shows how Jesus is God. The purpose of John’s message was made abundantly clear when he wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” Join me as we read one chapter a day and learn about the deity of Jesus Christ!
