One Day Nearer: 10 Devotions in Anticipation of Jesus’ Glorious ReturnНамуна
Day 10: Come, Lord Jesus!
How glorious and appropriate it is that Jesus’ last words in the Bible are, “Surely I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:20). He clearly wants us to remember that He has promised to come! And we know He is looking forward to calling us home someday in the rapture because of the tremendous affection He conveyed when He said, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:3). The Old Testament ended sadly with a curse, and the New Testament ends triumphantly with a promise of blessing. Christ has said that He will return, that He will establish His kingdom, and that we will dwell with Him for all of eternity.
Three times in Revelation 22, Jesus said He is coming soon. After His third declaration, the apostle John was so excited that he wrote, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” His eagerness leaps off the page, and it is a contagious enthusiasm meant to inspire all who read the Bible’s final words.
The word “Amen” means “so be it.” When we say, “Amen” alongside John, we are agreeing with His response to Jesus’ promise, “I am coming soon.” John couldn’t hold back. So ecstatic was he that he exclaimed,
“Amen—may it be so!” John was thrilled by Christ’s promise to come again, and we should be too.
Every prophecy about Christ’s second coming is a call for us to look to the future with anticipation. All through the Bible, God has included reminders for us that this temporary and sin-infested world will be replaced by a glorious and eternal home. As believers, we have been and will be raised with Christ, so we should seek the things that are above.
With every day that goes by, may we become increasingly excited and joyful because His return is one day nearer.
