How Can They Believe Without Hearing About Him?
Rom 10:14
“But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about Him?”
There once was a time when almost everyone in America had heard the truth about Jesus. This was especially true in the deep South where I have lived most of my life. While cultural Christianity was rampant, many if not most didn’t really know Jesus, but they had heard about Him. They at least knew they were not living like He wanted them to.
In many parts of the world, people have never heard the name of Jesus. This is becoming truer even in the United States. Many have only heard the name of Jesus as a curse word or heard it used in a derogatory manner in a movie or TV show. No one has ever really shared the truth about the name of Jesus with them. They simply have no idea who He is or why He matters so much.
In a day when so much information is available to so many via the internet, we might be tempted to say that everyone has a chance to hear about Jesus. That is true in one sense; almost everyone can find out information about Jesus via the internet. But the Bible makes it clear that the best way for someone to hear about Jesus is through a personal conversation with a friend.
The earliest disciples in the Gospels tell their friends about Jesus. The woman at the well in John 4 tells the people in her town -- even those who don’t like her -- about the identity of Jesus. In Mark 5, Jesus heals a man possessed by demons and, rather than agree to his request to come with the disciples, Jesus sends him home to tell his own people what the Lord had done for him.
How about your friends and your family? Have they heard about Jesus? Do they know what the Lord has done in your life? How will they hear unless you tell them?
