Gideon: Following God's Call

DAY 4 OF 7

Gideon’s Confirmation from God

Then Gideon said to God, . . . “Let me speak just once more.” (v. 39)

The call has been sounded. I know who I am, and whose I am. I’ve been set free from sin to do the work of God. But sometimes, even after all that, I’m still feeling wobbly. Still not quite sure if I’ve gotten it right. Still not quite feeling brave enough to step out in faith.

After Gideon has met with the angel of the Lord, smashed his father’s idols, and even been clothed in God’s Spirit, he’s still not quite sure if God is really going to do what he said he’d do. He’s still saying, “If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said . . .” (v. 36). And when God answers his prayer with the miraculous wetting of the fleece, Gideon still isn’t sure. “Let not your anger burn against me,” he prays. “Please let me test just once more” (v. 39). The real miracle of the fleece is that God has so much patience with Gideon. God “remembers that we are dust” (Ps. 103:14). God knows we are full of fear. And God just keeps reassuring us of his love and his plan, again and again and again.

What are you afraid of today? What do you still need to be reassured about, even if you’ve already heard it a hundred times before? Know that God is a God of patience. God will always listen, and he is always willing to calm your fears.

As you pray, let God know what you fear.
