DAY 2 OF 7

Throwing a Party

“‘... Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.” Luke 15:23-24 NIV

You just gave your life to Jesus! Congratulations on the best decision you will ever make. Now it’s time for celebration! This moment is so significant that Jesus literally described it as being born again. Kind of weird, but also incredible. See, when you’re physically born and you take that first breath of crisp, clean air, it’s shocking, but completely life-giving. It’s the same with your new spiritual life. Some things may be shocking as you experience the change that comes from being fully alive and walking through life with Jesus. Some of these changes are immediate, and some develop over time as you get to know Him more.

But it all starts with a celebration. There are few things more special to experience than a child being born. That’s how God feels about the decision you just made. He’s like a proud dad holding his kid for the first time. When talking about this, Jesus uses several examples of people finding things of great value and significance to describe how God feels and why He celebrates your decision.

A sheep, a coin, and a son. These are the examples Jesus points to. So in our context, it’s like your pet, your wallet, and your best friend. Imagine any one of those three being lost. Your dog runs away, your wallet and all your identification is stolen, or your best friend went on a trip and never came back. These are all highly concerning and serious situations that spur action. We’re searching, reporting, calling everyone we know, not resting, and willing to do anything to get them back. Feel that tension.

Then finally, you find your puppy, your wallet is returned, or your best friend comes home! Are you standing there indifferent and passive? Heck no! You’re running to them, and hugging them, and absolutely going nuts with joy and relief.

That is exactly what Jesus says is happening in heaven because of your decision:

“In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!” Luke 15:7 NLT

Challenge: Tell your story. Tell the people in your life why you decided to follow Jesus and how He is changing you. In fact, invite them to join you through the rest of this Bible Plan!
