Let's Talk Jesus!

DAY 4 OF 5

‘Do they even deserve God?’

When I first experienced God’s love I was so excited to share it! Wasn’t this exactly what my friends needed? This unconditional love? Those first few months I may have shared my testimony with EVERYONE who spoke to me (sorry random strangers on Instagram!)... but over time, it somehow seemed to get harder.

You see, my friends didn’t change all that much: going back to their toxic exes, gossiping and complaining. Every day brought a new issue. A new person to fight with, a new anger, resentment and pain. This frustration extends to leaders, influencers and even media personalities who mess up regularly. I just want to shake them! My anger makes me ask the question: ‘Do they even deserve God?’

And here’s the dark side of that question: While God builds, heals, and purifies us, we are also in danger of growing in silent pride. A voice that says: ‘Look at you now! Aren’t you something! Aren’t you better than them?’

Just in case, like me, you too find yourself shifting uncomfortably, here are some questions to consider that changed how I looked at people in my world.

  1. Whom did Jesus come for? For just a few of us or all sinners?
  2. What position were you and I in when God found us? We didn’t deserve God either. Paul acknowledges this in 1 Tim. 1:15, ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.’ And Charles Spurgeon adds to it: ‘I never cease to wonder why God elected me.’
  3. Are we seeing them for who we want them to be or who they are in Christ? Shift your focus from them to how much God loves them! Begin to accept and value the person and don’t get tired when you do not see immediate tangible results.

I know how desperately I once needed this Hope. How much more my friends, loved ones and even the cities we live in? You and I are called on to persevere, both in sharing Jesus and in prayer. After all, didn’t many do the same for us, for years and years, at that? If you’re ready to take action, here are two immediate steps you can do:

  1. Think of someone who frustrates you and identify at least three good things about the person. Look at the natural, God-given gifts in their life.
  2. Who are people who may tire or trouble you with their unchanging nature? Pray for them today.

Prayer: Lord, I repent from pride and self-righteousness that has entered my heart. I ask your forgiveness today. I ask that you would give me fresh vision to see the burden and your heart for those around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

Let's Talk Jesus!

Remember that first encounter with Christ and the burning passion to talk about Him? Eventually that fire became an ember. What happened? ‘I talk about Jesus, but is it convincing enough?’ ‘They don’t want to open up to me.’ While these questions and fears are real, it is important to know what the Word of God has to say. This 5-day devotional is for those wondering how and where to start sharing Jesus.
