Don’t Torment Your Soul
God turned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes because of their ungodly ways. Lot, a righteous man who dwelt there, bore witness to these lawless deeds day and night.
A prominent preacher has said, “Never let yourself get hurt.” Lot tormented his righteous soul and let himself get hurt. Inspite of seeing and hearing the sinful goings-on around him, he kept still. That’s the reason why Abraham had to stand in the gap and literally wrestle in prayer for Lot. Being righteous himself, Lot could have very well emulated Abraham. What stopped him? Fear, perhaps? Lack of faith? The attitude of ‘I am righteous, I will go to Heaven?’ or ‘These people just cannot be changed?’
Many of us are like Lot. In Genesis 6:6, we read that God grieved in His heart for making man. If it was so in that day, I wonder about God’s heart today. The present day sins of rape, legalized homosexuality, murder, suicide, idolatry, false prophecy, corruption, often outnumber the sins of Lot’s era.
Let us not torment our souls, as we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21b). What should we do when we see lawless deeds around us? We can, seek the counsel of the Lord Almighty, flare up righteously, or like Abraham, stand in the gap and pray.
Prayer
Lord, open our eyes and ears to the unjust deeds around us and open our mouth either to pray or to raise our voice against injustice. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
