Acts: Gospel Mission Then and Now

DAY 4 OF 5

Quick note: pay attention to how many times you find the phrase “filled by the Holy Spirit” as you read through Acts, such as in verse 8. Luke attributes the boldness of Peter’s actions to the power of the Holy Spirit, and we should do the same. Make efforts to not grow numb to the power of the Holy Spirit and refuse to take credit for the Holy Spirit’s work in your life.

When Peter finished his sermon, the religious leaders were angry and had Peter and John arrested. But because of Peter’s boldness in sharing the truth, thousands believed in Jesus! As we live on mission for the gospel, we must stay focused on the Kingdom result, not success or circumstances. The disciples were arrested, but thousands of people were saved!

In this chapter, Peter gets another chance to share the gospel. Once again, he points to the evidence of Christ’s power through the miracle of the lame man’s healing. Whenever you feel intimidated about sharing your faith, remember your faith hinges on real events! Jesus really came to earth, really died on the cross, and really rose from the grave after three days.

When you share your faith, remember you’re not merely sharing a theological opinion, but you’re sharing about real events that really happened!

Just as the crowds were amazed by the lame beggar’s healing, the leaders of the Sanhedrin were astonished at the boldness of Peter and John. Verse 13 says, “they [religious leaders] recognized that they [Peter and John] had been with Jesus.”

There will be a difference in your behavior when you have been with Jesus. Living for Christ means living changed. A changed life is a powerful testimony. Consider the change in Peter and John. Not long ago, they fled when Jesus was arrested (Mark 14:50). Peter even denied Jesus three times.

But here, they boldly confess Christ in the face of persecution and opposition. The only difference was the power of the Holy Spirit…the same power that dwells inside every believer. Being with Jesus changes you.

People will argue about theology and opinions, but just as the religious leaders show here, it’s hard to argue against a changed life.

Let’s live changed, Church.

God, thank You for sending Jesus to save us. Jesus truly changes everything. Give me the courage to live changed. I want others to be amazed, not because of who I am, but because of who You are. Help me to live in ways that show others I have been with You. Keep me aware and in awe of Your power. I love You and trust You. Amen.
