Money Matters: Devotions from Time of Grace

DAY 7 OF 30

Thinking About Money God’s Way: A Sacred Trust

It is a hard lesson to learn that all my money isn’t mine and that even my wage-earning skills are a gift from someone else. We all need repeated retraining in that radical concept. Wait--there’s more. The Giver of all seems to think that the resources he gives should be used for his agenda.

Jesus told a parable in which he was the protagonist. “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas [a gold Persian coin worth at least $4,000]. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said” (Luke 19:12,13).

The Savior has set us free from the guilt of our sins, from the dread of death and from an eternal death sentence in hell. Wait--there’s more. He also has set us free from the bottomless pit of self-absorption and self-indulgence. It is liberating and exhilarating to use our God-given resources in service to our King.

There is nothing like the sweet feeling of being a channel for God to use his money for his purposes. This is why we were made. This is joy.
