[Wisdom of Solomon] Protecting Your Marriage

DAY 7 OF 7

Marriage Habits

Having a great marriage is always the goal for every married person, but marriages are constantly changing. One season you may have kids in the house; the next, you get a dog; and in another season, you begin having sleepovers with grandkids. No season is the same, so no plan can suffice to give you a great marriage.

Instead of focusing on the end goal, focus on building good habits in your marriage. Habits are the daily choices that eventually turn into the paths that you and your spouse walk on. We must forge good habits and paths in our marriages so that our marriage can stand the test of any trial or season. We can love our spouses the way God loved us despite any problem in the way. The path remains the path, even though there are obstacles in the way.

Develop habits of obedience. When we obey the Lord and His ways, our obedience leads us to be the husband or wife that most people pray to have. Who wouldn’t want to marry someone who forgives like Jesus, loves like Jesus, talks like Jesus, and parents like God does? We mess up and fail, but the Lord disciplines us and gets us right back on track. Our spouses may hurt us, but we pray for them, knowing the Lord works on them. In some seasons, it becomes harder to love our spouse, but we choose to love despite how we feel. Why? Because we obey God and follow His example, and He has faithfully loved us.

The greatest habit to form is to remind yourself daily of the Gospel. We forgive much because we have been forgiven much. We love because of how much we have been loved. We seek to love first because God first demonstrated His love to us in Christ. When we do this, our marriage truly becomes Christ-centered.

No matter what your marriage looks like, no matter where you are in your walk with Christ, you can change. Today you can choose Christ over all things. You can start to preach the Gospel to yourself every day.

Thought for today: What paths are being formed in my marriage? What bad habits are in my life? Where have I not been reminding myself of the Gospel?

[Wisdom of Solomon] Protecting Your Marriage

In a sex-crazed culture, we all need to protect our purity. God’s Word gives us the wisdom to beware of sin and steer clear of decisions that can turn a spark into a forest fire. This seven-day plan encourages husbands and wives to be intentional in pursuing intimacy daily with the Lord and with their spouse.
