Anchorage: The Storm of Depression | Part 4 of 8Намуна
Willpower vs. Hope
In the eyes of a fallen world, hope is synonymous with a wish of the heart. The strength of hope, in this case, is in the strength of the person’s willpower and desire. It could look like putting hope in a job promotion, an engagement ring, or even someone else’s behavior changing to feel a sense of peace. When circumstances don’t change, and desires aren’t met, many are left asking the question, “Why, again?” After a multitude of unmet expectations, trying to rise above the waterline is, yet again, in the strength of the person’s willpower. It’s a lonesome cycle, and exhausting to be honest. Hope deferred makes the heart sick.
But, my friends, hope was never meant to be derived from ourselves. Hope is the confident expectation of what God has promised and its strength is in His faithfulness.
When convinced that your life was aimless and going virtually nowhere, God promised purpose and unique direction. When you felt there was no point in trying, God promised to make all things work together for the good of those who love Him. Though your strength, efforts, and abilities may have failed you, God has a great track record. He knows the end from the beginning, and planted you in the storyline regardless of your frailty. Nothing can separate you from the love of God. Hope does not rely on your own strength, but His, and nothing can separate you from that.
Reflection
What are some ‘unmet expectations’ you’ve encountered in your life? Take note of the first three that pop into your mind and jot them down. How do these desires align or misalign with the promises of God according to scripture?
