The People of God: The Story of the Church

DAY 5 OF 31

Israel’s son Joseph saves many from starvation in a famine, and it leads to the family relocating to Egypt. Fast forward 500 years or so, and the situation is not good. After going to Egypt in positive circumstances, the Israelites are now enslaved. The word Exodus means ‘the road out,' and the story follows the road out of Egypt.

The man who will lead the people on their journey out of slavery is Moses. The second reading for today tells of how Moses is saved by being placed in a tevah, commonly translated as ‘basket.’ Interestingly, this is the same word used for Noah’s ‘ark.’ Like Noah and the rest of the creatures on the ark, Moses is a symbol of hope running through the dark pages of human history. Pointing both backward to the Eden ideal and forward to God’s plan for salvation.

About this Plan

The People of God: The Story of the Church

What is the story of the church? This plan is a month-long journey through the Bible, looking at how God uses people, situations, and symbols to bring about communion between God and humanity once again. It follows the story of Israel and then the early church, highlighting the church's hope for resurrection and new creation and our role as agents of that new creation.
