It’s Time to Shine

DAY 3 OF 7

Growing in Christ

What are you studying? What have you been learning about or been interested in lately? I’m convinced everyone continuously seeks to acquire more knowledge and insight about the things they love or that capture their interest.

I’ve been studying Spanish for more than three years. I’ve even got a 909-day lesson streak. When I was in the beginners’ level, I thought I already knew a lot. Quieres una manzana? That means: Do you want an apple?

Today I can read, understand, and say more complex sentences. And I’m growing a little more proficient every day. At the same time, I’m grossly aware of how much more I still need to learn.

Similarly, as Christians, we’re not automatically mature and knowledgeable. It takes time and effort.

Speaking of time, I’ve also been reading the Bible every day for more than 30 years. Honestly, it’s not because I have to, but because it’s living fuel for my soul, practical for my life, and an opportunity to encounter and know my Father more.

The Holy Spirit guides me to draw near and grow in my knowledge of Christ and His Word. I’m growing in trust and delight as I know Him more intimately. Obeying what God says has become my greatest joy. And so, by the grace of God, I am becoming more and more like Christ.

When it comes to growth, we become like that which we behold. What are you most fixated on? That is what, or who, you are becoming.

To quote Charles Spurgeon, “Nearness to God brings likeness to God. The more you see God, the more of God will be seen in you.”

Consider the impact that time in the presence of God made on the prophet Moses here in Exodus 34:29:

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. Exodus 34:29 NIV

Many people have stressed to me that the best way to learn a different language is to immerse yourself in it by living among those who speak it fluently. I’ve certainly seen this to be true.

What if we applied this same principle to our growth in Christ? What if we decided that we haven’t “arrived”—because we haven’t—and chose to press on to know Christ more, repenting of and removing whatever sin keeps trapping us?

What if we immersed ourselves by filling our days meditating on His Word, practicing what it says, and praying continually?

What if prayer became as natural as breathing where we inhale—acknowledging and giving thanks for His presence, and exhale—expressing our need? What if we beheld Him daily in worshipful song?

What if we set aside time each morning and pushed out distractions in our day to know God more?

Reflection Question:

  • What can you change in your daily routine to grow more in Christ?

Look Closer: As you read through today’s Scriptures, look for what they reveal about growing and maturing in Christ. Take notes! Want more Scriptures? Do a word search on the word “mature.”
