Under His Feet
Today we come to a spectacular part of the story in Matthew 14. These verses give us a clue as to how long the disciples had been struggling against the storm. Jesus approached them “shortly before dawn.” This means that they had likely been in a fight for survival for eight to ten hours. Just in time, Jesus came to the aid—walking on the water—of His exhausted, fearful, and struggling disciples! This was no doubt the first such occurrence ever witnessed on this planet!
First, nothing can stop the Lord from coming to the aid of His people. As the disciples were no doubt beginning to wonder how they could even survive the storm, God did what God does. He made a way where there was no way.
Secondly, the greatest danger to the disciples in this storm was the crashing waves that threatened to capsize their boat and drown them in the depths. Storm gales can be frightening, but those winds are not deadly as long as the boat stays afloat. Crashing waves can be terrifying, but if the boat doesn’t sink, those waves are not deadly.
When Jesus came to them, He was . . . WALKING ON THEIR PROBLEM!
Everything that frightens us and everything that threatens us is . . . UNDER HIS FEET!
As much as we hate going through hard times, we would never be able to comprehend the lengths to which God will go in order to rescue us if we never face the threatening storms of life. If we can maintain a healthy attitude and perspective, every fiery trial we overcome can strengthen our faith and level of trust in God. Every crisis that we will ever face in life is under His feet.
We see this time and time again in Scripture:
In 1 Corinthians 15:27, when talking about Jesus, it is written that God has placed all things under His feet!
Ephesians 1:22 says the same thing—that God has placed all things under Jesus’ feet!
And finally, in Matthew 28:18, Jesus tells His disciples He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
It is written in God’s Word that Jesus is above all. He is above your storm, greater than your situation, and powerful to save you from it in miraculous ways. The only question remains: Why don’t we act like He is above the problem when we face the storm?
