IF GOD IS FOR HIS PEOPLE

The Old Testament narrative gives example after example of the Lord’s protection of his people. Though the details of each story differ and feature a variety of people used by God — Moses, Joshua, David and others — the main character remains the same: God himself. Apart from the Lord’s intervention, the people of God would have long ago been swept away by the flood’s raging waters (v. 5). Though it seems obvious, the psalmist endeavored to point out the side the Lord chose in the ongoing conflict between God’s people and their enemies. This psalm looks back — reviewing the battles — to clarify beyond any doubt that the people of God overcame only by the power of the Lord.

The apostle Paul made this same point in his letter to the Romans, though he did not only look at past deliverances. Believers root their assurance in the work of Christ. In Christ, condemnation no longer has any teeth (Ro 8:1). God will conform those he calls to the image of his Son (Ro 8:29). Furthermore, those whom he justified freely, he will most certainly glorify in the future (Ro 8:30).

Paul looked back to the work of Christ while also looking forward to a future hope. In light of these truths he wrote, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Ro 8:31). Though people have tried, no one has yet come up with a worthy opponent.

Jesus, please continue to conform me to your image, even when I resist. Help me to remember that nothing can harm me when I am on your side. Amen.
