DAY 133 OF 365

THE BLOOD THAT CLEANSES

Some things can easily be removed or fixed with minor adjustments. Sin is not one of those things. Sin separates people from God because God is holy (1Pe 1:16). From creation, God has spoken clearly about the fact that sin leads to death (Ge 2:17). Therefore, sin will always lead to the shedding of blood. Sin is costly.

God set up a temporary sacrificial system to provide relief and cover the sins of people — sin-payment from the blood of animals (Lev 4; 16). This system was only temporary because the blood of animals cannot cover the sins of people forever (Heb 9:12, 14). The animals functioned as substitutes for people, and they died so that the people could live.

In dramatic fashion, God sent Jesus to be the sacrificial Lamb who would die for the sins of the world. Jesus was “unblemished,” meaning that his relationship with God was not broken because of sin. This means that Jesus did not deserve to die, but chose to die for sinners as their substitute. Therefore, Jesus’ blood cleanses people from their sins. Unlike Old Testament priests who entered into a man-made temple, God admitted Jesus into his very presence (9:24). When Jesus returns to earth, it will not be “to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (9:28). His offer of forgiveness must be accepted in faith (1Pe 1:18 – 21).

Jesus, I so look forward to your return, when you will bring salvation to all who wait for you. Please help me to prepare the way. Amen.
