A PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE
Because of their quickly changing political situation, the people of Isaiah’s day were habitually looking for something sure and steadfast in which to find security and safety. Time and time again, their alliances and efforts to find such security and stability were thwarted. They foolishly made covenants that had deadly consequences and tried to secure themselves on less than firm footing. They should have turned to God to receive that sure foundation for which the people were searching.
The cornerstone was the first stone laid in building a structure; this single stone gave shape, security and integrity to the rest of the structure; it was the stone off of which everything else about the structure was aligned. When it comes to the Christian faith, Jesus Christ is that precious cornerstone. When believers build their lives on Jesus and on him alone, they can know that on him, there is eternal integrity and security (1Pe 2:6). What is the basis for all hope? What stands at the cornerstone of life? What gives shape to every relationship, decision and priority humans hold dear? If it’s something other than Jesus, then people who are building their lives on that something else are building on sinking sand (Mt 7:26).
Jesus, I know that life offers no security or stability apart from you. You give shape to life, to being. Without you, the cornerstone, we would have nothing. Amen.
