Advent: Catholic ReflectionsНамуна
We often hear that Jesus spoke with authority. Authority is defined as a power to influence others. It is someone with official permission or sanction, or it is the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience. Jesus' words have influenced the world for over 2,000 years, his official permission to speak is his right as God to speak to those he has created, and rather than enforcing our obedience, he gives us the freedom to choose to love him.
In our Bible readings today, the book of Numbers quotes Balaam's poem that reminds us again of the greatness of the Lord and prophesies of the coming leadership from Israel that is, of course, Jesus the Messiah. In Matthew's Gospel we read of a challenge to Jesus' authority that Jesus refutes with a demonstration of his wisdom.
Perhaps pray today that you will choose to accept fully into your life the authority of Christ.
