Serve Wholeheartedly
Every point in a tennis match begins with a serve. Being able to gain control of a point right from the start with a strong serve can make a huge difference. Serving well, wholeheartedly, in life has countless benefits as well.
Finding the right stance and grip is key. Having a firm foundation, being steady on your feet, and using a proper hold on the racket helps with consistency. Another key part of a great serve is the release. The proper release allows for the most effective contact of the ball. Releasing too high or too low has consequences. Before a match, releasing the stresses of life ensures a greater outcome. Releasing cares of the world, burdens, heaviness, weariness, and discouragement into the hands of the Father frees you up to live and play well.
A great serve is relaxed and involves shifting forward, hitting the ball while fully extended. You can’t change much in life, looking back. It’s best to stay forward thinking, leaving the past behind. As you serve, it’s also key to follow through while remaining stable. Consistency is key.
Generally, you give it your all, serving wholeheartedly, with your first serve. If it’s out or hits the net, serve the second ball, not as hard. With the second serve, you are simply trying to get it in and ensue play. I loved learning a key life principle once at a tennis drill regarding the serve. People who have a powerful game usually like to return a powerful serve. Coach Tim taught me that, to counteract a heavy hitter, sometimes you can throw up a softer serve as the first serve. It can be unexpected and effective. Having variety in your service game enables you to throw different kinds of serves and “mix things up” a bit. Sometimes an opponent has a weaker side. Strategically serving there can be effective and actually sets you up to capitalize on the return.
Jesus, our king of Kings and lord of Lords ultimately had the greatest service game of all time. He knew his stance. He came to offer life and freedom, to combat evil and lead believers to everlasting life. Jesus had a grip on His Father’s business. He showed others His way and, essentially, how to play the game of life. He was steady on His feet yet washed others’ feet as well. In any situation—in his life, ministry, and even his death on the cross—He served wholeheartedly.
