A Radical Faith
What is Radical Faith? It is choosing to step out to fulfill God’s clearly defined will at possible personal risk and sacrifice.
Nehemiah was a dramatic example of that kind of faith, even if he was full of fear.
Four months had passed since Nehemiah had heard about Jerusalem. He undoubtedly was asking God to show him what to do. God did more than that. The way He worked behind the scenes would change the course of Jewish history.
But Nehemiah didn't know God was preparing the king's heart. He only knew he had to trust Him and take a huge step. He was scared. After all, the king could say, “Off with his head!” for any reason!
I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”
I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” (Nehemiah 2:1-3 NIV)
Radical Faith doesn’t mean you are not afraid; it means you are willing to act despite your fears. Because of Nehemiah’s willingness, God was able to work on the king, and Nehemiah was able to ask for permission to travel to Jerusalem. Plus, he got help with security and supplies!
God is always searching for a man or woman who will stand in the gap for Him. He will use you wherever you are—on the job, with your family, or at church. I guarantee He will ask you to do something you are afraid to do or simply don’t want to do.
Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen. . . . And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him. (Hebrews 11:1, 6 NASB)
Yet the moment you step out in Radical Faith—the moment you trust God is who He says He is and wants to reward your faith—you will be empowered by Him. Not only that, you will grow more intimate with Him and see Him work through you. And the next step? Creating a Strategic Plan.
