Day 7: Being a Giver

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic, "Lord of the Rings,” the wizard Gandalf gives Frodo Baggins an important ring to vouchsafe. The ring has immense power and Gandalf commands Frodo, "Keep it secret, keep it safe.” Gandalf knew the danger Frodo faced if he shared with anyone the whereabouts of the ring. It was essential that Frodo keep the ring's presence a secret so that the enemy would not be able to find it. 

As disciples of Jesus, we are in danger of a different sort than Frodo. If we are not humble and discreet in the way we give of ourselves and our resources, we are in danger of losing our reward in heaven. 

Jesus explains that when we do good so that we will be recognized by others, we run the risk of forfeiting God’s blessing. A disciple should obey Jesus, but that obedience should not highlight the goodness of the disciple, but rather the Lord whom he or she follows. 

A disciple’s life is a delicate balance. Jesus has already explained that a disciple should be a light in the world. But how can we give light to a dark world in secret? Jesus said, "... let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:16). 

How can we give of ourselves or our resources in secret, pray in a closet, and at the same time show the light of Jesus so that others honor God? As disciples, we do not give to charities or help those in need to attract attention to ourselves, but we must instead give glory to God who enables us to serve others well.

A disciple always faces the choice of pleasing self or pleasing God. Why are we tempted to please people?  The reasons may vary, but usually we are either fearful of others or desire the approval of others. We desire affirmation or compliments. 

Instead of doing good work to impress others, a disciple should live with the anticipation that God is always present. Imagine if you lived with the expectation that Jesus is always with you. How would it change your behavior?

Would you say the same thing to your co-workers? Would you treat your family with more kindness and patience?

Do good regardless of whether you are recognized or not. God always sees our actions and the good done in secret will be rewarded by God who sees everything.
