Serving Others
When you hear the words “serving others,” what do you think of — sharing your toys, helping a friend, or making cookies for a neighbor?
All of these are definitely examples of service, but serving others is more than just doing stuff. It’s serving because of what Jesus has done for us.
The greatest example of serving others comes from the life of Jesus.
Jesus led by serving and loving others. No task was too small for Him! We see this in the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet.
Jesus and His disciples had traveled a great distance around the desert in sandals — you can just imagine how dirty and smelly their feet were.
In Bible times, the servant of the house would usually wash the guests’ feet as they entered a home. But this time, Jesus took on the role of a servant, knelt down, and washed His friends’ feet.
It took the disciples by surprise; they didn’t expect their leader to serve them in this way. In doing this, Jesus showed us we can serve people right where we are with love and humility.
He washed the disciples' feet not out of duty, but out of humility and love. We can do that, too!
Ask yourself: How can I be like Jesus and serve those around me? Who can I serve in my home, community, and neighborhood?
Challenge yourself: Look around for opportunities in your community. Talk to your parents about volunteering at a local food bank, care center, or in your neighborhood.
Pray: God, thank You for showing me how to serve others. Make me aware of ways I can serve those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
