Rest for the SoulНамуна
To Rest is to Grow Dumb
As we end this week on the last definition of rest, I want to use the story from Mark 4:35 where Jesus tells his disciples, “Let’s go to the other side of the lake.” Jesus doesn’t give much detail on when they will get to the other side, why they are going to the other side, or what they might encounter while going to the other side. He gives a simple, one-sentence instruction for the disciples to follow.
For many of us, we are not at rest unless we have all the details upfront before we make any moves. While having knowledge and understanding is essential, it can also be a hindrance if that is what we find rest in.
The Holy Spirit gives us instruction and leading in part, not all at once. We often overthink or run two steps ahead of God when He has only given us one step. At times I have to reel my thoughts back in when I notice I’m going too far into questioning how or what might happen. Don’t allow the “what ifs” to take you out of a place of rest, where you have clasped onto an idea and not the word God gave you.
Write the book, start the business, go back to school, or simply be still. Whatever the word God gave you, grow dumb in that word, because it’s OK not to know anything else but what He said. Rest in knowing that what God said is all you need to know at that time. So when a storm comes to disturb what you know God told you, you are not wavered by what it looks like! You found rest in the word He gave you! This REST anchors your soul in the high winds of a storm and you will be able to boldly say, “He told me to go to the other side, so I’m going to the other side!”
