[5 Conversations With Christ] Distractions

DAY 2 OF 6

Priorities

Martha is doing good things. Her hospitality stress shows respect for her guests. When you have people over, you ask: Is everything set? Is the table ready? Will the food be good? Did we vacuum and dust? But Martha’s hospitality stress maybe wasn’t about the meal, her guests, or her home. Maybe, it was actually about her.

In his study Bible, Chuck Swindoll writes:

Martha’s thoughts are not on Jesus. They’re not on Mary. They’re not on the meal. They are on Martha herself. Worry is winning the day. Aren’t we often like Martha? Self-focus chokes our ability to distinguish incidentals from essentials. It siphons our joy, so that we become judgmental, like Martha. We need to learn to listen to the Savior's voice.

Martha’s a good person, but she is distracted. I find, when I go into Martha mode, moving forward too fast, that it is not really about the task. I can tell myself, “Well, I want to do well for the kingdom of God,” but it can also be true that “I want Greg to look good.” The dysfunction can be deep in my heart.

So, here’s a question for us: Why do we live in Martha mode? “Well, I’ve got to get things done to provide for my kids.” It may be about your kids, or it may be about you. “Well, I’ve got to make an impact for God.” Yes, and I also have the need to prove myself.

Martha mode can be a lot about Martha. She’s focused on too many things. Nobody’s saying, “Don’t clean the house,” or “Don’t have a good meal.” Jesus showed up for dinner! This is the Savior at your house in Bethany. There will be a bit of panic getting things ready.

Martha’s distracted by good things, even spiritual things. Good things are good, but too many of them can take your view off the Lord. Don’t let activities, sports, news, grades, or even ministry ruin your heart for God. Keep your focus on the Lord.

Lord, I want to prioritize You. You are my number one focus.

About this Plan

[5 Conversations With Christ] Distractions

The 5 Conversations with Christ series explores five times that Luke recorded Jesus’ dialogue with those around him. The focus of this plan is the Lord’s interaction with Martha regarding her sister Mary. This passage is found in Luke 10:38–42. If you are distracted by many things, or if you have ever wondered whether God cares about all your work, this plan will encourage and bless you.
