How To Stop Worrying

DAY 1 OF 4

Worrying Is Fruitless

There’s a story in Daniel chapter 3 about three God-loving guys named Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who refused to bow down and worship a statue of the king. As a result, they got thrown into a fiery furnace. Then Jesus appeared in the fire with them and they not only got out of the furnace, but they didn’t even smell like smoke!

Those three guys didn’t waste any time worrying about their situation. They said, “King, we won’t bow down to you, we trust in God, and even if we burn up, let it be known we serve only Him” (v. 17-18).

In order for you and me to keep believing God and see miracles in our situations, we’re going to have to stop worrying. I know, that sounds easier said than done. But it’s vital. God doesn’t want you to worry.

Worrying is fruitless. It doesn’t solve one problem or help anyone. You probably can’t even remember everything you were worrying about a year ago. As the old saying goes, “A truckload of worry won’t pay an ounce of debt.”

You can’t worry and be in faith at the same time. It’s impossible.

What are you worried about right now? Look at what God’s Word says about it in Matthew 6:

Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by worrying and being anxious can add one unit of measure (cubit) to his stature or to the span of his life? And why should you be anxious about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his magnificence (excellence, dignity, and grace) was not arrayed like one of these (vv. 25-29 AMPC).

You probably already know you shouldn’t worry. And maybe you’ve tried to stop. But here’s the reality: God’s not merely making a suggestion. He’s telling you don’t do it.
