True Love Revealed Through The Cross
Few things in life would be more horrific than Roman crucifixion. It was a brutal means of execution, designed to inflict pain, cause a slow, agonizing death, and be a public spectacle of the might and domination of Roman rule. The crucifixion of Jesus was worse than most, or perhaps all others. Jesus had been beaten with fists, rods, and whips. He had his beard pulled out, and a crown of sharp thorns pressed down on His head. He was deeply wounded and bloodied even before the spikes were driven through His hands and feet. The crucifixion of Jesus was a thing of horror. It is also, perhaps, the most vivid picture of perfect love the world has ever seen.
Jesus did not have to die. We could have all lived empty lives and then gone to hell, but He came specifically to die on the cross for us. At the time, humanity didn't care. The Bible makes it clear that we were not deserving of His sacrifice, nor did we even want it or think we needed it. We were not godly people, but sinners. We were powerless to help ourselves, and we did not want God's help. In fact, we were His enemies. Yet, with all these things being true, Jesus purposefully came to die on the cross. Who would do that, and why would anyone do that?
The only answer is God would do that, and He did it because He loves us. He desires to be in an intimate and loving relationship with us and is willing to go to the most extreme lengths to make that possible. It is a love far more deep and profound than we can even imagine. We can not fully comprehend it, but we can embrace it, receive it, and experience it.
If you don't feel loved, look at the cross. If you feel rejected or betrayed, look at the cross. If you feel empty and hopeless, look at the cross. If you feel worthless, look at the cross. The absolute horror of the cross depicts an unfathomable love. True love, the perfect love of God for us, is revealed through the cross.
