Learning to Be Compassionate: 6 Kid-Friendly Steps

DAY 4 OF 6

Jesus Loves the Little Children

The Big Idea: God has a plan and purpose for every child. One way to show compassion is by helping other kids know their worth in God.

“Let the children come to me.” With those words, Jesus ushered in a whole new way of thinking! Jesus loves your children and all the children throughout the world.

Some children, such as those living in poverty, may not feel loved. In many cases, they may feel forgotten or as if they don’t matter. One way your kids can show compassion is by helping other children know they’re treasured by God. And it isn’t as hard as it might seem!

The Encouragement Game

In this game, you’ll spend a few minutes sharing God’s love and encouragement with each other.

Take turns completing this sentence: You are really good at [Activity or Talent], and I can imagine God made you to [Action, Career, etc.]. Example: You are really good at cooking, and I can imagine God made you to share your delicious recipes with others.

Encourage your children to call out the good things they see in others in the same way as they go about their days.

Jesus Loves Us Banner

In this activity, you’ll create a banner that will serve as a reminder of God’s love as well as a reminder of those who need to see his love.

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • Construction paper.
  • Markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Hole punch.
  • Yarn.

Cut some hearts out of your construction paper. On each heart, have your kids write down a way God has shown his love to your family.

On some of the hearts, write the names of children or others who may have a difficult time seeing God’s love because of the hard things they’re going through. You might hang a heart for Elisabeth or maybe a friend or family member in need.

These names will serve as a reminder to pray for those individuals. Punch a hole on each side of the hearts and string them together with the yarn. Hang the banner in a prominent place in your home.

Encourage your children to add hearts when God shows his love or brings another child in need to mind.
