Prayer: Father, thank You for the desires that You give us. I confess that I often lose sight of You in the midst of my own wants. I pray that my desires would continually point me back to You. Help my heart reflect Yours. Amen.
A Good Desire
The desire to marry is a good, God-given desire. It’s something that a lot of people have; I know I do. So often, though, I’ve felt shameful for having this desire. I’ve bought into the lie that just because I desire marriage, I don’t trust God enough. While yes, at times I do lose sight of God’s goodness in the midst of my desires, the desire itself is not a bad one.
Before the fall, we see God give Adam this desire. A wife was the helper most suited for him to navigate life with. It’s important to note, though, that pre-fall Adam’s relationship with God was perfect. Adam was perfectly fulfilled in God. God’s heart here is for man to not go through life alone. We see that we are hardwired for companionship; this is part of God’s original design for mankind. Marriage was originally designed by God to reflect His companionship with us.
Therefore, our desire for marriage points us even more deeply to our desire for God. He ends up being the ultimate desire of our hearts. The more we long for Him, the more we seek Him, the more we want to see Him glorified. May we come to God with the deepest desires of our hearts, trusting that He sees and knows them perfectly, whether we see them fulfilled on this side of heaven or not. Let your desire for the Lord be your ultimate desire above all else; it’s in Him alone that we find complete satisfaction.
Look in the Word:
- Read Psalm 37:4. What does this mean? How can you trust God with the desires of your heart?
- How can your God-given desires point you to God’s character?
What’s Next?
- What are the desires that you have not seen fulfilled in your life? What is your response to these unfulfilled desires? Confess this to the Lord.
- Thank God for the desires He has given you! Pray and ask Him to help you desire Him above all else.
