DAY 4 OF 5

MY OFFERING

You met me at the well where I was drinking all that made me dry, and here You give me living water.

The story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well can be so familiar to us that we tend to skim past it, thinking that we already know its ins and outs. So, we think: “What's the point of rereading it?” But I wrote these words when Jesus softened my heart and showed me what He was telling me about myself in that story. I had spent everything chasing after things that I thought would fulfill me, that I thought would satisfy me. They promised to be refreshing and fulfilling, but they only left me emptier. I spent my entire life drinking what only made me thirsty again: chasing after others’ approval and attention, success, and distraction. I was frantically drinking from a well that only left me drier and more desperate than the last time. It was at this well, one day, that He met me.

“Come and meet a man at the well who told me everything I’ve ever done!” (John 4:29)

I would add this: “Come and meet a man at the well who told me everything I’ve ever done; He gave me living water!”

It seems that Jesus always shows up at the well—the false source that we want so badly to satisfy us—knowing that it never will. When we are at our lowest, grieving over the pain of our emptiness, hitting rock-bottom—that is when He comes in:

“...but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
