DAY 2 OF 5

Hollowed Hearts

What is it like to have a ‘hollowed heart’? When I was in middle school, I had a pure heart. I was going to church every week, heavily involved in the youth group, reading the Bible, and praying on my own, and I was even helping lead worship. Over time, however, my focus shifted off God and onto myself. I wish I would’ve caught it happening, but sadly I didn’t, and as a result, my faith started becoming fake. I made it all about me on stage leading worship, and it became all about me in everything else, too.

What happened? My pure heart became a hollowed heart. And thankfully a youth leader of mine realized it and called me out on my issue, and thankfully I had a changed heart! Here’s the first key element we need to watch out for: imposters of the faith have a hollowed heart. After realizing where my focus had been, I knew I needed a NEW heart. But only God can give you a new heart. King David needed a new heart in the same way, and in Psalm 51:10 he prayed this prayer, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”

Where is your heart today; is it focused on God or on yourself? Remember, only God can give you a new heart. Let’s pray for this right now:

Father in Heaven, we recognize that only you can give us a clean heart, a new heart. So, we pray first asking forgiveness that we’ve taken our focus off of you and ask that you give us a new heart that we can live faithfully for you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
