Forty Days Without FearНамуна
FEAR CANCELS OUR CREATIVITY
The first chapter of the Bible is where God creates mankind in His image. At this point, humans knew very little about who God is – they didn’t yet know about His love, His power, His justice, or His Trinitarian nature - they really only knew Him as Creator.
What this means is that, regardless of whether we feel creative or not, and regardless of how people perceive our creativity, we are all designed in the image of the Creator God, so we are all creative people. If we spend time in the presence of the Creator, we will find creativity rising in us. The writer and pastor, Erwin McManus, writes that ‘to create is to reflect the image of God. To create is an act of worship.’
Often when people talk about contemporary innovators and creative-thinkers we think of hipsters with beards sitting in artisan coffee shops! Because we have this stereotype of what modern creativity looks like, there’s a temptation to box creatives into a particular type, look, or style,
But, if it’s true that we are all creative, it doesn’t matter if we’re an accountant or a single mum raising three kids; we can all create! The Dictionary says that innovation is ‘having or showing an ability to make new things or think of new ideas.’ To be innovative you have to be creative, but if we know that we are in relationship with the Creator and He has made us creative, then it frees us up to innovate.
One of the major roadblocks to innovative thinking and creative solutions is writing ourselves off. But let’s always look back to Genesis and remember that we share in the creative Spirit of our heavenly Father – after all, He gave Adam all the animals to name! He has called us and equipped us. What would we initiate if fear didn’t hold us back? We were designed to design; we were created to create; we were formed to form new things, not fear them.
Action: Let’s declare over ourselves that we are creative and in close relationship with the Creator! Does He have any ideas to share with us today? What do we have in our hands that we can create or innovate?
