The Work That Really Matters
When I was in high school, I signed up for an AP English class. I was surprised to find out on the first day of school that I was already behind. Apparently, there was summer reading that I completely missed. I immediately went to my guidance counselor and asked to be switched out of the class. The problem was, there wasn't any room in the regular English class, so it was going to take a few weeks for me to be switched. So I had to keep attending the AP English class, knowing that none of my work was going to be counted. Actually, I decided to ask my friend, who was in the regular English class, to send me the work for his class. I might as well get a head start on the work that actually mattered!
In our lives, we tend to focus our time, attention, and energy on things that don’t really matter in the end. When we read these final words of 2 Peter, we realize that Jesus is coming back (and probably sooner than we know). Peter used the words of Jesus and described His return as “a thief in the night.” That means we don’t know when Jesus will return. But I know one thing… When Jesus does return, I want to be caught doing something that matters. There’s nothing wrong with video games, social media, sports, or any other hobbies. However, in light of the imminent return of Christ, all of those things seem silly.
If Jesus really is coming back soon, I don’t want to waste my time on AP English. I want to get a head start on work that matters! As Peter says, I want to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. I was to know more about Jesus. I want to experience more of Jesus. And I want to grow in my capacity to receive and walk in His love and grace for me. Don’t get caught doing work that doesn’t matter. Because the work that does matter is worth giving your life for! So as you go, give your life to growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. You won’t regret a single day!
