The World - In It But Not Of It

DAY 4 OF 5

If you are traveling along the road and see a bright yellow or orange light, you tend to slow down and become more observant of your surroundings. Warning signals demand greater awareness.

After Jesus prayed to God asking that His followers NOT be taken out of the world, He immediately followed up by asking God for protection from the evil one. These words are like a warning signal. As you go into the world, you need to be careful and aware.

There are people and powers hostile to God in the world, and because of your new identity in Jesus, you will not always be welcomed.  When you follow God, there may be great difficulties living in the world. Jesus prays for your protection so that the challenges you encounter will not cause you to give up.

There are also many things in the world that may seem very appealing and desirable. The Bible tells us "Do not love the world or anything in the world.” (1 John 2:15) The enemy of God wants nothing more than to see you give in to temptation. Jesus prays for your protection so that you will stand firm in your pursuit of obedient living.

REFLECTION

Think about the different areas of your life. Where do you need protection from the evil one? Who can you ask to help you in challenging circumstances or temptations?

About this Plan

The World - In It But Not Of It

The world is God's good creation. Humanity has twisted and spoiled the world in many ways. Jesus told his followers to be IN the world but not OF the world. Read what the Bible says about how God's children can be "in, but not of."
