What Can You Do?

DAY 9 OF 10

Let’s be honest - it’s nice to win sometimes. Whether it’s in a video game, on the soccer field, or just playing a game of Monopoly with your family, taking first place is always a good feeling. When we serve others and put others first, sometimes it feels like we’re losing. But when it feels that way, according to Jesus, we’re doing exactly what we should do.

Jesus told some of His closest friends and followers that if they wanted to be first, they had to put themselves last. Putting others first could look like literally letting someone in front of you in line, or it could also look like serving your family dinner before you put food on your plate, letting your siblings pick which movie to watch instead of choosing yourself, or asking your friends what game they want to play instead of playing your favorite. By serving other people, we are putting their needs ahead of our own and making ourselves last, which doesn’t always feel great. However, Jesus knows that the feeling and reward that we get from serving is so much better than always winning or putting ourselves first. Serving is always the better option.

Challenge: Today we challenge you to put yourself last. Think about ways to be a servant today and ask God for the humility that it takes to take last place.

About this Plan

What Can You Do?

You may look at the problems around you and wonder, "What can I do?" Jesus calls us to see a need and meet that need. We are to serve others. Over the next 10 days, we'll take a look at what it means to serve and what that looks like.
