Endurance and PromisesНамуна
I will give you rest
And on the seventh day, God rested. It’s a well-known verse in the context of creating the earth, heavens and the universe. I know I’d be tired after making all that!
This example of rest is modelled by Jesus as he lives out his ministry. He often withdrew to be alone and to take time out with his father.
Society expects much of us. The demands are never ending; the work is never done. It’s so important we take time out for ourselves and with our father too. How do you think this can work for you?
Jesus says, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’ (Matt. 11:28 NLT). Rest can be translated as refreshment. We all need refreshment. Rest helps you to re-energize so you can keep going, and it also gives a space to reflect and ponder on the good, bad and indifferent things of life.
Refreshment looks different for everyone. It could be a time of mindfulness, or it could be playing a game or doing some sport with others. It could be watching a show that makes you laugh or it could be having an evening with friends and having fun together. Laughter is a great medicine; find something that makes you laugh every day!
Time with others who encourage and build you up is a great medicine for endurance. Paul was refreshed by Onesiphorus while he was in prison. How much time do you set aside for catching up with good friends?
Refreshment can come to you from nature. Walking in the country, woods or mountains or by the sea can be great for refuelling. Looking at pictures of nature or creating a painting or collage can be a fun and restful thing to do. How do you get refreshment?
Take time regularly to rest, to pray and to get refreshed, so that you can endure all that life throws at you and survive!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, our great provider. I worship you with all my heart, mind, soul and strength. You are everything to me. Thank you that you chose me to be your child and that you promised to help me with everything. Help me to serve you, love others and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus as I endure the challenges that come my way. Amen.
