Thirty Days of Thanksgiving and Worship

DAY 8 OF 30

Spirit and Truth...

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:24

Lord Jesus speaks these words to the woman at the well. She knows she has just encountered Eternity, and now she is questioning Him about the proper method, place, and propriety of worship. Jesus cuts to the chase. It doesn’t really matter how, when, or where we turn our eyes and hearts toward heaven in adoration but that when we do, it is Holy Spirit ignited and filled with truth. How is this done?

Today, let’s look at worshiping in spirit.

Our spirit is the unseen place within us that once was dead in sin before we came to Christ. In that late-night encounter with Nicodemus, Lord Jesus told the man seeking truth that he must be born again of the Spirit. The Lord was describing the spiritual CPR that takes place when a person receives Him as Lord. The point of our salvation when our once dead spirit is brought to life and filled with the Holy Spirit. This part of our being is where we commune with God, sense His presence and leading, and recognize that we are His children.

We need to remember that our flesh – our selfishness and stuff that is the arena of our soul – profits nothing. When we come to the throne room no matter where we are – the laundry room, the boardroom, the coffee shop, or a sanctuary – the Holy Spirit within us is available to glorify Lord Jesus through us.

To worship in the spirit is to silence the thoughts that distract us, and humbly make a place for Him to take over. The Holy Spirit is awaiting our simple invitation to come and aid our worship. And come He will. Doing this may seem challenging at first, yet we must start somewhere even if our praise seems weak and tepid. Begin to praise in your known vocabulary and through the gift of spiritual language.

Worship. Lift your praise. Adore. Repeat. And touch the hem of His garment.
