The Distraction Dilemma

DAY 4 OF 6

The Devil’s Favorite Tool

One of our greatest distractions is simply “BUSYNESS.” Often, we have this illusion of self-importance based on a busy life. What a lie.

Let me tell you a story about the devil having a garage sale, selling his “tools.” One of the items he was selling was very expensive. When inquired about such an expensive item, the devil replied, “Oh, that item has such a high price because it is one of my most valuable tools.” Upon further inquiry, the devil explained, “I call this tool BUSYNESS as I can keep everyone so distracted and off course/purpose…and they never really know it.”

Ugh! This is the story of my life. Whether my calendar is full, or my home distractions are beckoning, I can simply stay busy almost doing nothing of great importance. I hate this in myself. Focus has been a battle all of my life. Years and years ago, I would likely have been diagnosed “ADHD” or maybe more rightfully “ADDDEFGH.” Easily distractible. Often busying myself with so many unimportant things that ended up crowding out time for the important things. Totally getting sidetracked!

Reflecting on the Bible story about Mary and Martha, I often feel very convicted about my priorities. Martha busied herself with tasks while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus to worship Him. Martha “was distracted.” Jesus admonished Martha that Mary was doing the most important thing. I do realize that we have works to do here on earth, but the over-arching point of this story, to me, questions whether I am living out of a performance-based mentality or whether I am living out of my intimate relationship with my Lord. Do I live FOR Him on my ever-running performance treadmill? Of do I live FROM Him out of a deep motivated relationship with Him? Christ in me, through me and from me is my only true hope of glory (Col 1:27).

Ponder:

Are you too busy being just busy or are you busy with those most important things that are a priority for you? How can you adjust your days to usher in a more calming pace for living?

Prayer:

Oh Lord! Please keep me from the empty pursuit of a busy life squeezing out a purpose-filled life. Help me be aware of just how too much “busyness’ can be the enemy’s tool for distracted living.
