Living by Faith

DAY 20 OF 24

The Infinite Power of God

Habakkuk rejoices in the reality that the God of Israel is the LORD omnipotent. He wields unlimited and irresistible power and He does all that He pleases (Psalm 115:3); none can stay His hand or stop Him (Daniel 4:35). This reality is central to our faith, for we do not serve an impotent God but one who is powerful beyond imagination.

In God’s acts of creation and providence, His ever-present power is seen everywhere. The glory and splendour of His powers are visibly displayed on earth and in the heavens. God created the world out of nothing by the power of His word (Psalm 33:6) and He sustains it by His word (Hebrews 1:3). Every minute atom in this universe proclaims God’s incredible strength. However even all this is but a mere glimpse of His infinite power. His true power is beyond our comprehension that even the brightness of the lightning flash is but a veiled display of His glory.

God’s power is also seen in His acts of redemption. It was God’s power that humbled the might of the Pharaoh by the plagues. It was God’s power that led the children of Israel in the wilderness, and it was His mighty hand which gave them the Promised Land. We see God’s mighty power in His redemption of our souls. Jesus most clearly displays God’s power on the cross where He destroyed the powers of sin and Satan, and triumphed over death itself by His resurrection. This is the resurrection power that is now at work within all who believe in Jesus (Ephesians 3:20) and will sustain them till the last day (Jude 24-25). May all of us who are weak and frail find rest in the awesome power of our omnipotent God.
