What Trees Can Teach Us About God and His Kingdom

DAY 3 OF 15

Another special tree

When God created the garden of Eden, He planted two special trees. The first one was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the other one was called ‘the tree of life’. When Adam and Eve had sinned, God sent man out of the garden of Eden “lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever” (Genesis 3:22, ESV).

Why were Adam and Eve not allowed to eat from this tree anymore? Because they had earned death by their disobedience, as God had clearly told them beforehand. But also because ‘living forever’ outside of a relationship with God would be utterly horrible! Sin and its destructive consequences would go on without end, without any hope of salvation. That would be even worse than death.

But God had a better plan. He sent His Son to save humanity from sin and death. Whoever believes in Jesus and remains faithful to him (= “conquers” the devil by faith), gets access to the tree of life again. Not to live in sin forever, but to live eternally in a restored relationship with his Creator, in ultimate joy and peace.

Do you long to live in God’s presence forever? Then accept his offer of forgiveness and devote yourself to Him!

About this Plan

What Trees Can Teach Us About God and His Kingdom

When we try to find the central theme of the Bible, we might not immediately think of ‘trees’. But when we take a closer look, trees are mentioned quite often! Not as main characters or major topics, but they are frequently used as metaphors or symbolic representations of important truths. In this Reading Plan, we will read some Bible texts about trees, and see what we can learn from them.
