Confidence Over Comparison
My best friend, my sister, and I got pregnant for the first time in the same year. Nobody planned it that way, but it was an exciting time. After each one of us had our baby, I somehow ended up with the “bad baby.” This term we picked up from somewhere (I really have no idea where) defines the baby as bad because it cries often and does not sleep.
My friend and my sister had the happy and sleep-through-the-night babies. So, there I was, wondering what I was doing wrong. My mind was not in the right place. The problem was not my “bad” baby, but my thoughts. I was comparing my baby with other babies. Mothers with firstborns already have to deal with so much, including their bodies changing and hormones going all over the place, that making comparisons is not helpful. There is no such thing as a bad baby. A baby is a baby.
Mamas, the comparison game will kill your confidence. God knew exactly what He was doing when He made you a mom. He made you fearfully and wonderfully, with the ability to be a mother to your children. When you focus on everything and everybody else, it is hard to appreciate your uniqueness. You are God’s handiwork.
Begin by shifting your focus to God. Read His Word and know the God you serve. The more you know Him, the more you will understand your general purpose and who you are meant to be. He is not ordinary or small. He is a God of miracles who entrusted you with being a mother.
Your confidence comes from Christ. You were not created to just get married, have babies, go to work, and pay bills. You were created in God’s image. God made you to reflect His Son, Jesus. If you start believing that you are either better or not as good as others, you are missing the point. God wants you to focus on Him. He wants you to live out a confidence that comes from Him.
Trust Jesus and remember that He’s got you! Surround yourself and learn from mamas who you look up to and admire, but do not compare. You are doing the best that you can with the children God gave you to love. Love is the answer. God’s Word is filled with promises that will make you bold.
