Fighting FOMO

DAY 4 OF 14

FOMO: “The One”

It’s the typical “guy-meets-girl” scenario: Guy walks into a bar and sees a girl—it’s not you. They leave, and you’re alone. Now what?

The world builds up this “soulmate” hype. Movies are the worst. You’ve got teenagers caught in crazy vampire love triangles or shooting arrows and fighting the Capitol beside their friend-turned-heroic-boyfriend. Everyone seems to have found “The One,” and it only took an hour and a half. Is there something wrong with us? When we meet our soulmate, will we just know? Where is our “One”?

SPOILER ALERT: “The One” does not exist.

Don’t freak out. “The One” may not exist, but love most certainly does! You can find that person who will stick by you no matter what! But believing that love is some uncontrollable emotion that takes over and you spend the rest of your life singing duets while little woodland creatures make your wedding cake? Nope. Leave that to Disney.

Love is not a feeling. Love is a choice.

Whenever you do make the choice to marry someone, they become “The One.” Every day, no matter what, you will make the choice to love and honor that person. And every day, love will grow as it becomes less about the fairytale and more about the faith God wants you to have a great love story.

You see, Jesus chooses us. He loves us when we are unlovable. And He has called us to love the same way. So stop focusing on finding “The One” and start focusing on the One who made you. You could miss out on a compliment from your crush or miss out on your calling from your Creator. You will never feel full seeking satisfaction in this one, then that one, then that one. There is only ONE. His name is Jesus.

Now what?

1. Are you settling for “a” one that may be “a” jerk?
2. Are you missing out on who you could be because you are focusing on who he/she might be?

About this Plan

Fighting FOMO

FOMO. It’s what happens when everyone else’s great day stops us from enjoying our own. We’ll never find contentment when we’re constantly pursuing what might have been. Fighting FOMO was created by Fuse, the student ministry of NewSpring Church, to help students move past the fear of missing out and find joy in their present circumstances.
