I Am David

DAY 1 OF 4

DAY ONE

“I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will” (Acts 13:22).

Do you ever feel like a failure? I’m sure David did at times.

Before he was king, David was the youngest of eight sons. He took care of sheep for his father, Jesse. When the prophet Samuel came looking to anoint Israel’s next king, Jesse didn’t even think to have David gather with his other sons. Samuel had to ask for David to be brought in from the field.

Three of David’s brothers joined the Israelite army, and one day Jesse sent David to check on them. Instead of being glad to see David, however, the oldest brother harshly rebuked him. And when David said he would fight the Philistine giant Goliath, King Saul thought he was too young and inexperienced.

David did eventually become the king of Israel, but he still faced difficult times (some of which were due to his own poor choices). He had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba, and after trying to cover up the resulting pregnancy, he had her husband killed. David later decided to take a count of his fighting men, putting more trust in numbers than in God. The king also had many problems with his own children and even had to flee when his son Absalom tried to take over the kingdom.

Yet with all of David’s flaws, God still called him “a man after My own heart” (Acts 13:22). How is that possible? Because David had his heart set on the Lord. That is why God chose him to be Israel’s king. David didn’t have to be the smartest or strongest man in the room to be great. He knew that a right relationship with God was the key to success in every area of life. And when he made mistakes, David always repented and asked the Lord for forgiveness.

You may not be a king or queen, a world leader, or even the president of the local garden club. But God is calling you to do great things for Him. Like David, you will probably make some mistakes along the way, but that does not mean you are a failure. You too can be a person after God’s own heart if you determine to seek Him with all your heart, soul, and mind.

What do you consider greatness? What do you think God considers greatness?
