The 7 Sayings of Jesus on the Cross

DAY 4 OF 7

John 19:28 “I am thirsty”.

Many today are into drinking certain types of vinegar for their health. If you’ve tried vinegar by itself, it’s hard to swallow and not very enjoyable. There’s nothing like a cold glass of water to refresh you.

Imagine for a minute you’ve been working out in the sun, or doing some outside activity and you became very thirsty and instead of water, you were given vinegar to drink? How horrible would that be and especially if you were already feeling dehydrated?

Jesus said, "I am thirsty" and I can only imagine the thirst Jesus experienced from the hours of slow death in which He was suffering from dehydration as well. While it was customary to give vinegar to those being crucified, it only added further to His suffering.

Beyond this suffering there was something even deeper going on here.

This was a fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy found in Psalm 69:21: “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.”

When Jesus said He was thirsty, this prompted the Roman guards to give Him vinegar and they were not aware this would fulfill the prophecy.

Jesus, Who is The Living Water, is the same Jesus we should hunger and thirst for. He won’t give us vinegar, but He will give us His living water that will never run dry.

May you pause and praise God for fulfilling His promises and praise Jesus thanking Him for enduring immense suffering on The Cross for you.
