Burn Your White Flags (Hebrews)

DAY 3 OF 29

What are you tempted to put above Jesus in your life? Angels have never been on the list for me!

For first century Jews, however, angels were a much bigger deal. Angels were seen as agents of revelation. They ministered in the presence of God, they mediated the covenant to Moses, they appeared to people as manifestations of God’s presence, and acted as guides. They even assisted Israel in battle and intervened in Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac. Angels played an important role in revealing God’s will to His people. In the big moments of God’s story, they were always there.

But what if there was a better way that God has chosen to reveal himself and guide His people?

The author of Hebrews contrasts Jesus with angels to demonstrate the superiority of His message and ministry.

Angels worshipped Jesus; Jesus worships no-one!

Angels are temporary; Jesus is eternal.

Angels are servants; Jesus sits at the Father's right hand.

God has always sent messages and messengers, but none as significant and important as Jesus! Jesus is God’s best message to the world!

A messenger gives weight to the message they bring! The more important a messenger, the more important the message.

When the United States sends the Secretary of State, or Australia sends the Foreign Minister they’re putting their full weight behind the message they’re sending.

God couldn’t send a more important messenger to deliver His message of love to the world than His own Son.

We may not be tempted to elevate angels as guides. Yet every day we’re told “follow your heart”.

But the heart is an inferior guide for life. Jesus is better!

Are you listening to Jesus? Is He guiding you? Leading you? And are you following Him?
