Forgive And Be Forgiven
Just as anger and sin are harmful to our bodies and emotions, forgiveness brings healing and restoration. It brings healing to our bodies and emotions. It restores our relationships and reputation. A good way to let go of our anger is to forgive—forgive those who offended us, forgive those who made us feel angry in the first place, and accept forgiveness from God for all of those times we got angry and sinned.
We find the word forgiveness many times in the Bible. It is a really important word. Forgiveness from God sets us free. Forgiveness extended to us on the cross gives us eternal life. Forgiveness heals and restores. It is important that we learn to receive forgiveness from God and from others, and that we learn to forgive others and ourselves. It is not enough to forgive, but not be forgiven. It is also not enough to be forgiven, but not forgive. Forgiveness is a two-way street.
Grace, kindness, and compassion follow forgiveness. They are so far away from anger, yet so close. They come as a consequence of letting go of our sinful anger and forgiving. We show grace, kindness, and compassion when we decide to stop being angry and we forgive. God compassionately extends His grace and kindness along with His forgiveness. When we start forgiving, it is like we break a barrier that separates us from God.
It might not always be easy to forgive. There are many things that may take years for us to really forgive, but we must understand that when we forgive, we are setting ourselves free through Christ. We are giving God control over that situation, and by doing that we are bringing His heavenly healing into our lives. We give the Holy Spirit control to do what we cannot do.
Thought Of The Day: When we get past our anger and start forgiving, it should lead people into restoring their relationships with others and with God. That is the consequence of righteous anger and forgiveness.
