Spirit At Work: Devotions From Time of GraceНамуна
God’s utterance
No one has ever seen the Holy Spirit, or any spirit for that matter. Spirits can see us; we can’t see them, unless they use their powers to assume human form. Much of the work of God the Holy Spirit is hidden from our eyes. But that doesn’t mean he’s been absent from the earth. On the contrary--the Spirit of the Lord has been carrying out his holy agenda throughout human history.
It is the Spirit’s grand mission to connect people with their Savior through Word and sacrament. Everything good in our lives ultimately comes from God’s Word, and the Spirit uses his prophets to convey the very utterances of God himself. King David, anointed of the Lord, was aware of being a channel for information from heaven: “These are the last words of David: ‘The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel’s singer of songs: The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue’” (2 Samuel 23:1,2).
Without the Spirit’s utterance you would be completely on your own to try to find truth in the world’s swirl of competing philosophies. You would never know anything for sure. But when you read the Bible, you can have complete confidence in its power, its truth, and its applicability to your life, for you are experiencing the Holy Spirit’s information and power directly.
