How to Love Reading the Bible

DAY 6 OF 7

Step 8: Learn a Verse or More

At the end of Moses’s life, the people of Israel were at the doors of the Promised Land. Imagine how important Moses’s last words must have been for these people. In them, you can find wisdom in a “nutshell.”

He encouraged the people to lay up his words (which were actually God’s words) in their hearts and in their souls, to bind them as a sign on their hands, as frontlets between their eyes. They were to teach them to their children, to talk about God’s Word when they were sitting in their house, and when they were walking by the way. When they lay down, and when they rose. He encouraged them to write them on the doorposts of their house and on their gates.

I know that it may seem a little extreme to carry Bible verses written between your eyes, but I think you get the point. It is crucial for us to be continuously reminded of and surrounded by God’s Word.

You can start by learning by heart some verses of the Bible, especially those that God uses to speak to your heart. Get these into your brain. Then you can “read” the Bible any time, any place.

Practice by looking up these verses. Choose one to try to learn by heart. Then a second one. And so on. Here you have some to start:

  • Philippians 1:21
  • Matthew 7:12
  • Psalm 100:2
  • Romans 12:21
  • Genesis 1:1

Step 9: Ask Your Friends for their Special Verses

Many people have verses that mean a lot to them. Some will tell you stories—if you ask. So if you look up their special verse, two things can happen.

First, you can see that verse in a new light. It’s not just any verse. It’s your friend’s special verse. You may think of them each time you read it.

Second, it will bring you closer to that friend. They will like the fact that you looked up their verse.

This was also part of Moses’s message to the people of Israel. Talk about God’s Word with those who are part of your life, as these discussions will fuel your growth and give you a different insight and outlook that will help you grow in your Christian walk.
