You got the power...to say No!
Word of the Day: Manipulation
Definition: To control or play upon by artful, unfair, or insidious means; especially to one’s own advantage (Merriam-Webster, 2019).
Reflection: Manipulative behaviors can be so subtle—at least in the beginning. People that engage in this type of behavior can literally drain the life out of you. Manipulation can occur in various forms of relationships: family, the workplace, church, and school. Sometimes it’s not always easy to connect the behavior with the person, as this is not necessarily a physical trait, but more of an internal flaw. Being deceitful and controlling to benefit or gain personally is selfish and not of God. Having this kind of character is self-serving and is disrespectful to God (Lev. 25:17).
The best way to deal with a person that struggles with this trait is to set boundaries. It would be best not to share too much personal information with them because they may craft a way to use it against you. If it is someone that really knows you, practice saying, “no” more often. Do not allow them or yourself to make you feel guilty either. Putting up parameters to protect your peace is your responsibility. Do not engage in the trap of arguing with them because their ultimate goal out of the exchange is to win.
Last, pray for them. Do not allow negative emotions to dictate your actions; practice releasing it. In the end, God will have the final say (2 Cor. 11:14-15).
Prayer: God, thank you for direction in managing relationships with toxic people. I will put these instructions into action and pray for them. In Jesus Name. Amen.
Affirmation: I have the power to protect my peace, because Jesus is peace.
