Journey Of The Seed - Catch The Bible's Big Picture In 60 Days

DAY 14 OF 60

LEADERSHIP TRANSFER

[Scheduled Reading: Deuteronomy 8-11, 28, 30, 31, 34]

The most effective leadership transfer in the Old Testament might be the one between Moses and Joshua.

I heard a Bible teacher once refer to Joshua as “Mini Mo” (i.e. little Moses). Joshua was successor to Moses and took the Israelites into the Promised Land.

Both Moses and Joshua understood the importance of God’s Word.

Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses strongly admonishes the Israelites to teach God’s words to their children.

It’s almost as if he knew they wouldn’t (he knew them well) and that particular disasters would follow if they took their eyes off God.

Pay particular attention to Moses’ charge to parents in Deuteronomy, Chapters 4, 6 and 11. (Here’s the one in chapter 6.)

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." —Deuteronomy 6:4-7

In Deuteronomy 31, Moses commissions Joshua and instructs the Israelites to read the entire law publicly at the end of every seven years (verse 10-13).

Sure enough, some time later Joshua read the entire law to a public assembly, including the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners(Joshua 8:35).

Joshua was very mindful to help the Israelites pass the knowledge of God to the next generation (Joshua 4:6, 21).

I’m inspired to be like Moses and Joshua: to treasure God’s Word, read it publicly in my home, and pass down the knowledge of God to the next generation in my family.

Blessings and Curses

Remember the condition of blessings and curses in Leviticus 26? If you obey – good fortune; If you disobey – disaster.

This theme is repeated in Deuteronomy 28.

And the theme is played out all through the Old Testament.

Mankind continues to fall back in touch with their rebellious nature. No matter how miraculous God’s rescue and deliverance are, and how genuine the people’s response of repentance and forgiveness, God’s children seem to drift again... and again.

Sadly, this will be the fate of the Israelite nation.
